Red Cliff, CO Hiking

There are countless, scenic hiking trails surrounding Vail Valley and on the peaks above Vail Village and Beaver Creek. These trails offer exhilarating excursions for all categories of trailblazers. Hiking is a great way to explore the local area and discover the region's flora, fauna and wildlife. Go with a guide and you will learn the history of the area, see points of interest and understand the geological factors that created this unique and beautiful area. The Hiking Center in Beaver Creek provides maps of many local trails and offers guided hikes. Another great source for trail information is the U.S. Forest Service office in Minturn 970-827-5715.  Because there is so much terrain in the Vail Valley, chances are that you can find a hike that fits your family's needs and skill level. It may be as simple as a stroll along a creek, or your family might feel adventurous enough to summit one of the dozens of local peaks. Special backpacks are also available that will allow an adult to carry a youngster on their back. Check local bookstores for literature on hiking in the area they are a great resource for finding the right hike for your needs. If your family is hungry for more in-depth information on the area, consider a guided hike through the Vail Nature Center. Additionally, the Gore Range Natural Science School offers classes, tours and workshops for all ages, on topics ranging from Eco-Exploration to Dinosaur Fossils. Be sure everyone in the group is outfitted with proper footwear. Waterproof hiking boots with ankle support are essential if you plan to do anything off a grated, maintained trail. Hiking at this altitude is not for the faint at heart. You'll quickly become winded when ascending, and you want to make sure to carry plenty of water to prevent dehydration. If you're not sure about how much climbing you want to do with the whole clan, consider riding the Eagle Bahn Gondola to the top of the mountain, and taking a leisurely stroll back down.
